How Far Along Am I? Why Timing Matters for Your Abortion Options

When you are staring at a positive pregnancy test and you know you aren't ready to have a baby, your brain usually goes straight into problem-solving mode. You want to know what your options are, how much it will cost, and most importantly: How much time do I have?

If you are researching abortion options in the Chicagoland area, the very first thing you need to determine is exactly how far along you are. Gestational age (the medical term for how many weeks pregnant you are) completely dictates what procedures are legally and medically available to you.

Here is a breakdown of why timing is the most critical factor in your pregnancy decision.

The Two Paths: Medical vs. Surgical Abortion

Abortion procedures are not one-size-fits-all. They are divided into two main categories, and the cutoff lines for each are strict.

  1. The Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion)

The "abortion pill" is actually a two-drug regimen (mifepristone and misoprostol) designed to end an early pregnancy.

  • The Timing Limit: The FDA has only approved the abortion pill for use up to 10 weeks of pregnancy (70 days from the first day of your last period).
  • Why it matters: If you are past the 10-week mark, taking the abortion pill carries a significantly higher risk of complications, including incomplete abortion, heavy hemorrhaging, and severe infection.
  1. Surgical Abortion

If you are past the 10-week cutoff, or if you prefer an in-clinic procedure, a surgical abortion is the next option.

  • The Timing Limit: The type of surgery you undergo depends entirely on your trimester. Early on, a Vacuum Aspiration procedure is used. If you are further into your second trimester, a more invasive Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) procedure is required.
  • Why it matters: As the pregnancy progresses, surgical abortions become more invasive, take longer to recover from, and become significantly more expensive.

Why Your Period-Tracking App Isn't Enough

You might be looking at your phone right now, counting the weeks since your last period to figure out which procedure you qualify for.

While period apps are helpful, they are not a medical diagnosis. Because ovulation cycles naturally fluctuate due to stress, diet, or medication, the date you actually conceived could be very different from what your app predicts. Furthermore, up to 20% of early pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. If your pregnancy is no longer viable, you would not need to go through the cost or physical toll of an abortion at all.

Your Essential First Step: A Pre-Abortion Screening

Before you book an abortion appointment or order medication online, you need medical proof of your pregnancy's status. The only way to get a highly accurate measurement of your gestational age is through an ultrasound.

An ultrasound provides three vital pieces of information:

  1. Exactly how far along you are: This tells you which medical paths are actually available to you.
  2. If the pregnancy is viable: This confirms there is a heartbeat, and you aren't already experiencing a natural miscarriage.
  3. Where the pregnancy is located: This rules out a dangerous ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy growing outside the uterus), which the abortion pill cannot treat and requires immediate emergency medical care.
