For Guys: How to Handle the "I'm Pregnant" News

When a pregnancy test turns positive, and you weren't planning on it, the focus goes straight to your girlfriend. She is the one dealing with the physical changes, the hormones, and the reality of being pregnant.

But you are in this room too.

If you are the boyfriend, you might feel helpless, scared, or like you need to "fix" this problem right now. While you can’t carry the pregnancy, you have a huge role to play. Here are five real ways you can step up and support her without making things harder.

1. Listen First, Fix Later

Guys are often wired to be problem solvers. When she says, "I'm scared," your instinct might be to jump straight to the solution: "We can handle a baby," or "We can get an abortion."

But right now, she doesn't need a fix; she needs to be heard. When you jump straight to the solution, it can feel like you are brushing off her feelings. Instead, try asking, "What are you feeling right now?" and then just listen. Let her talk without interrupting.

2. Don’t Say "Whatever You Want"

This is the biggest mistake guys make. You might think saying, "I'll support whatever you decide," is the nice thing to do.

But to her, that phrase often sounds like: "I don't care enough to have an opinion" or "You deal with this, I'm out." It makes her feel lonely.

Instead, try saying: "We are in this together. I want to help us make the best decision." This shows her that she isn't carrying the heavy weight of this choice all by herself.

3. Go With Her

Don't let her go to the doctor or the clinic alone. Sitting in a waiting room by yourself while facing an unexpected pregnancy is terrifying.

Go with her to her appointments. Even if you just sit in the lobby or hold her hand during the ultrasound, just being there sends a powerful message: "I’m not going anywhere."

4. Do Your Homework

Don't make her do all the research. If she is worried about how a baby develops, or what happens during an abortion, or how adoption works—you should be reading about it too.

When you take the time to learn about your options, it takes the pressure off her. It shows that you are taking this seriously and want to make a decision based on facts, not just panic.

5. Check Your Own Stress

It is normal for you to be scared. You might be worried about money, school, or your parents finding out. But be careful not to let your fear turn into pressure.

If you push for a quick decision because you are stressed, she will feel it. Pressure usually leads to regret later on. Give both of you time to breathe and think clearly.
