Get all the facts before you make
Abortion is a medical procedure that involves surgery or medication that ends your pregnancy. It requires a medically trained and licensed physician. As a patient, you are entitled access to information about the procedure itself.
Before you decide on whether abortion is the right choice for you, you should consider all the facts. Having medically accurate information, together with proper emotional support, will help you to make the right decision for you and your loved ones. You don’t have to do this alone.The Women’s Center can help. We offer free pregnancy tests to confirm whether you are actually pregnant and free limited ultrasounds upon assessment.
Surgical Abortion is an invasive procedure that must be performed by a trained physician and involves removal of the fetus from the uterus. The type of surgical procedure will depend upon how far along you are in your pregnancy. After a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is necessary to confirm a viable pregnancy and determine gestational age.
Medical or Medication Abortion involves a “chemical” abortion in which a licensed physician prescribes or administers a drug that is intended to end your pregnancy. This chemical process is often referred to as “the abortion pill” or RU-486, which involves a 3-step process:
1. Mifepristone™ + Antibiotic: Mifepristone™ causes fetal death, while an antibiotic is needed to prevent infection;
2. Misoprostol™: Misoprostol™ is administered 2 days later in order to expel the fetus;
3. A return visit for a follow-up examination to ensure that the fetus has been expelled.
As a patient, you are also entitled access to information about the risks, complications, and/or side effects involved in the abortion procedure.
Surgical abortion risks include: hemorrhaging (excessive bleeding), perforated uterus, infection, hormonal imbalance/interruption, infertility, future ectopic pregnancies, reproductive complications and complications with future pregnancies.
Medical/medication abortion risks include: bleeding, cramping, nausea, headache, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, hormonal imbalance/interruption, further need for surgical abortion, and surgical intervention to stop heavy bleeding.
In addition to these “physical” risks and side effects, both surgical and medical abortion may have “emotional” side effects that include: depression, anxiety, guilt, suicidal thoughts, unresolved grief, and sense of loss.
